Often Misunderstood: LONG & LOW
Long and low may be one of the most misunderstood phrases in dressage. Two experts, Suzanne Dansby-Phelps and Chrissa Hoffmann, clarify and illuminate the true meaning of long and low.
Troubleshooting Unfortunately, the phrase long and low encourages riders to become obsessed with the outline of the horse. "The biggest problem that I see," Chrissa says, "is riders who focus only on the neck positioning, resulting in horses behind the vertical with short, restricted necks. Horses ridden this way never learn to correctly engage and therefore cannot carry the rider in an uphill balance." Another common mistake in riding long and low is riding the horse with a low neck, but its nose on its chest--the opposite of riding without tension--and contrary to the purpose of this exercise. "Often you see people doing a version of long and low with the horse behind the vertical and on the forehand," Chrissa says. "It's not about the neck being low or the neck position; it's about creating good back activity, working in balance and having the horse feel loose and free of any tension . . . ."
